Look 2 (on the far left) started out looking like that..

But ended up looking more like this.

Sourcing the lace was pretty fun; I must have gone through 100+ swatches in order to find this magical lace. Although I loved the copper color, but I had to go with silver so I could dye it along with the chiffons..

My friend Maureen helped me dye the fabrics in her cute lil' studio off Fulton Market.

Then I began appliqueing the lace bodice together. It's a cool process of laying the seam allowances on top of each other, but stitching along the motif in an irregular pattern. It makes you a little dizzy after awhile because it's like lace Escher style.

Final fitting at school. Btw, I hand sewed all of the hems - baby seams!

Before our amazing trip to Europe, I graduated with a BFA in Fashion Design. It was a long journey in education, but I enjoyed it for the most part. I mean..who doesn't like to learn? I took crazy classes like Space, Time, & the Arts and Spirituality & Empowerment. But during my last year I put a lot of energy and love into my senior thesis collection. It was inspired by the Rio Tinto river in Spain, hidden treasures, and strong women. This is look 1.

On the left.

I hand dyed all of my fabrics starting with this amber organza.

Navy and green chiffon.

I also hand dyed the lace.

1st fitting in December 2010.

Then I began to bead the appliqued lace.

Fast forward to the beginning of April. I am lucky to have friends who are talented/the real deal to help me with my photoshoot. Thanks to Maria Ponce for the photography and Manase Latu for makeup.

Euro vaygay pt 3.

We stopped off in Istanbul for a quick 3 day stay. Turkey was a first for me and the bf.

Istanbul lies on both European and Asian land.

This converted church was soooo beautiful, even more so than Notre Dame in Paris.

All and all Istanbul was an interesting trip. On the last day we went to a hamam, a turkish bath housed in an old Ottoman structure. The experience was not the spa moment I hoped for...and we left Istanbul happy to check it off the list.

Then we came back to Mykonos!! We stayed at the same hotel as last year and had such a great time. I absolutely love Greece. The people are so nice, the town of Mykonos is beautiful, the weather is perfect, and one can really recharge. We returned to the States happy boys.

Euro vaygay pt 2.

My bf and I went on a Euro vaygaytion last month and I am still digesting it. It was epic. My favorite leg of the 15 day trip was Paris, obviously.

We stayed in le Marais just off the Place des Vosges.

In an amazing hotel called Pavillon de la Reine, it was lux but not annoying. I absolutely loved it.

We had a Louvre moment.

We also did the Pompidou - which had a great collection.

On the last day, I took a train out to Versaille hoping to have an inspirational moment...

I wanted a Grace Coddington moment a la September Issue..but it was not the case. Although I did love the grandeur of the estate, I thought it was a f--ing tourist trap. At one point, a woman used my shoulder as a tripod to take a photo of a sign or something.

Thanks dude.

One of my favorite bits of Paris was an antique fair we went to near the Bastille, normally I do not like to "thrift" or whatever but this was different... We met a couple, who were British expats living in the south of France(!!), who gave us tickets to the fair down the street. There was quite a selection: kimonos, china, jewelry, vinyl, linens, silverware, etc. But I found some great vintage sequins and tortoise shell thimbles at one of the stalls. Then for lunch we ate from this old provincial couple who served fresh oysters caught in their boat with delicious french cheeses, a baguette, and wine. It was beyooonnnnddddd.

Over vaygay, I was watching all these weird, random videos and happened upon a super inspiration story about Vivian Maier (1926-2009). She was a North Shore nanny who explored photography on her days off. Her sophisticated, but untrained eye captured well over 100,000 images but what is most interesting to me is Vivian's lack of desire to share her creativity. She was happy to explore Chicagoland and humankind through the medium of photograhy, without broadcasting the information. Vivian had expressed no interest of sharing her work, even though I think it's something worth sharing. I guess I am most surprised/inspired by her modesty.

Anyway, I went to the Cultural Center here in Chicago (which is beautiful in it's own right, it's the old Chicago Library, has beautiful mosaic tilings, and huge Tiffany domed ballrooms.) Although the exhibition was a little caca/ghetto, her work is wonderful and here are some of my favorite images.

oaaafff. i have had a busy fall so I was super thankful to have 2 days off in a row. here's what i did..

i had a dyeing date with my friend maureen. she helped me dye all my silk chiffon and organza for my thesis. the blues turned out beautiful, there are more blue-green gradation tones that you don't see in the picture.

we redyed this one, so it turned out more vibrant. think ruby-red.

the color palette seems a little primary here, but in context they are layered in long silhouettes along with silver or navy chantilly lace and transparent latex.

oops. i baked this deliciousness too. parmesan and cauliflower cake/quiche.

my friend/star lester has another amazing story in the december issue of elle. i LOOOOVE this spread. it's for real WO.MEN. (as she would say.) there are so many showstoppers in this story. the leopard look with cartier ring and givenchy shoes, the westwood look, this versace picnic set, the ysl jumper with the moschino clutch (BUY right in your face!), and ALL of the hats (especially the black croc- it's everything!) so i ate my delicious baked good with some arugula and enjoyed lester's spread.

i love the highline. it felt like an oasis in the city, which is funny bc when i look at pictures it still looks pretty "urban"...but anyway, i enjoyed it. the space is beautifully landscaped and features many small, thoughful, details. so nice.

the past few months, i was subletting on Perry St. in the west village. it's an amazing neighborhood and it was one of the highlights of my stay (besides my bestie, who is a real dream, & pies n thighs, which also is a real dream). I fell in love with the tree lined streets, cute dogs, great restaurants (westville!!!!), boutiques, gourmet delis, magnolia bakery's late hours, and the river front. not to mention martha stewart, grace coddington, and cynthia rowley have been spotted on my block.

my address also happened to be three doors down from carrie's apt from sex in the city. so there was a constant tourist presence in front of the building, snapping photos with hands on hips - "giving"... but not.
